The video below of Cal Newport, author of So Good They Can't Ignore You, was featured in an article by Erin Greenawald for The Muse.

Do you agree with the points in the video?

  1. I enjoyed this speaker and his style of presenting, especially the way he came up with his own laws of science. ;) However, I'm not sure if I agree fully with what he is saying. I understand that passion can grow once people are already into their careers, however, I think it is passion that helps people figure out what types of jobs they are truly looking for. The word "interest" could easily replace passion in this video. He is saying that people do not need to follow their passions in order to find the right career for them but I do think people need to figure out their interests in order to walk in the right direction of finding a fulfilling career. In my opinion, passion can grow from what we are interested in. Ultimately, I guess I would agree to "not follow your passion" but instead "follow your interests!"

  3. I really enjoyed this speaker. I actually was browsing TEDxTalk videos the other day and found something similar - I'll have to post it! But I have to agree - following your interests will always keep you, well, interested versus getting burnt out following a passion that could ultimately change.
